What are Trophoblastic Diseases?

Gestational trophoblastic diseases (GTD) are a group of diseases originating from the trophoblast cells that form the placenta.

Types:

  • Complete molar pregnancy: All pregnancy tissue is abnormal

  • Partial molar pregnancy: Partially normal, partially abnormal tissue

  • Invasive mole: Mole showing invasion into the uterine wall

  • Choriocarcinoma: Malignant trophoblastic tumor

  • Placental site trophoblastic tumor: Rare type

  • Treatment Methods

    - Vacuum curettage: Evacuation of molar pregnancy

  • Chemotherapy: In malignant trophoblastic tumors

  • Surgery: Hysterectomy in resistant cases

  • Beta-hCG monitoring: Regular hormone monitoring after treatment

    Trophoblastic tumors respond very well to chemotherapy and cure rates are 90-100%.
