Chocolate Cyst (Endometrioma)
Chocolate cysts (endometriomas) are cysts filled with dark brown blood formed by endometriosis in the ovaries.
What is a Chocolate Cyst?
Chocolate cysts (endometriomas) are cysts that form as a result of endometriosis tissue implanting in the ovaries. The accumulated old blood inside creates a dark brown, chocolate-colored appearance, hence the name 'chocolate cyst.'
Chocolate cysts can be unilateral or bilateral. Their size can range from a few centimeters to over 10 cm.
Chocolate Cyst Treatment
Treatment is determined based on the cyst size, the patient's age, and pregnancy plans:
- Monitoring: Regular ultrasound follow-up for small (<3 cm) and asymptomatic cysts
What is Cystectomy? Cystectomy is the surgical removal of a cyst (chocolate cyst, dermoid cyst, etc.) from the ovary while preserving the ovarian tissue. In cystectomy performed by laparoscopic or robotic methods, the goal is to completely remove the cyst while maximally preserving healthy ovarian tissue. This preserves the patient's ovarian reserve and fertility capacity.
Assoc. Prof. Erkan Elçi specializes in cystectomy (cyst removal) operations.
