What is LEEP Surgery?
LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) is the removal of abnormal tissues on the cervix using a thin wire loop and electrical energy. It is the most commonly used method for treating CIN (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia).
During the procedure, abnormal tissue on the cervix is both treated and a tissue sample is obtained for pathological examination. This feature makes LEEP both a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure.
How is LEEP Performed?
LEEP is usually performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia:
1. The abnormal area is identified by colposcopy 2. Local anesthesia is applied to the cervix 3. Abnormal tissue is removed with a thin wire loop 4. Bleeding control is performed (electrocautery) 5. Removed tissue is sent for pathology
The procedure takes 15-20 minutes. The patient can go home the same day.
