What is Conization?

Conization is the removal of cone-shaped tissue from the cervix. It is an important gynecological procedure applied for both diagnostic and treatment purposes.

What is Conization?

Conization (cone biopsy) is the removal of cone-shaped tissue from the cervix. This tissue is both evaluated for pathological examination and used for treatment purposes. Conization provides wider and deeper tissue removal compared to LEEP.

Conization indications:

  • CIN 2-3 treatment

  • Cases where colposcopy is insufficient in ASC-H or HSIL

  • Endocervical canal lesions

  • Discrepancy between smear and colposcopy

  • Suspected microinvasive cancer

  • Adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS)

  • Conization Methods

Conization can be performed with different methods:

    - Cold-knife conization: Cold cut with scalpel, widest tissue removal option

  • LEEP conization: Conization with electrosurgical wire

  • Laser conization: Conization with CO2 laser

The procedure can be performed under general or local anesthesia. The patient is usually discharged the same day.

    Recovery process:

  • No sexual intercourse or tampon use for 4-6 weeks

  • Mild bleeding and discharge is normal

  • Avoid heavy physical activity

  • Follow-up appointment at 4-6 weeks

  • Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between conization and LEEP?+
Conization generally provides deeper and wider tissue removal. LEEP is preferred for more superficial lesions, while conization is used for endocervical canal lesions and more serious cases.
