What is ASC-H and How is it Treated?

ASC-H (Atypical Squamous Cells Cannot Exclude High-Grade Lesion) is a cytological finding detected in smear tests where HSIL cannot be excluded.

What is ASC-H?

ASC-H (Atypical Squamous Cells - Cannot Exclude HSIL) is a cytological diagnosis indicating abnormal cell changes detected in smear tests. Unlike ASCUS, in ASC-H results, the possibility of a high-grade lesion (HSIL) cannot be excluded.

Approximately 40-50% of patients who receive ASC-H results are found to have CIN 2 or CIN 3 (high-grade precancerous changes) on colposcopic biopsy. Therefore, ASC-H results should be taken seriously and colposcopy should be performed immediately.

ASC-H Treatment Approach

When an ASC-H result is received:

1. Colposcopy: Detailed examination of the cervix under magnification 2. Biopsy: Tissue samples from abnormal areas 3. Endocervical curettage: Evaluation of the cervical canal

Treatment is planned based on biopsy results:

  • CIN 1: Follow-up or treatment

  • CIN 2-3: LEEP or conization

  • Normal biopsy: Check-up after 6-12 months

  • Frequently Asked Questions

    Does ASC-H result mean cancer?+
No, ASC-H is not cancer. However, since the probability of a high-grade precancerous lesion is high, it must be evaluated with colposcopy.
What is the difference between ASC-H and ASCUS?+
ASCUS refers to low-risk atypical cells, while ASC-H refers to atypical cells where a high-grade lesion cannot be excluded. ASC-H is a more serious finding.
